Hello, This is a beta version, so it may have bugs. I am making this post to introduce the update so I can get some feedback and improve it while things are moving fast. Hope you enjoy the new features and improvements and find them useful. Let me know how it goes! - Bird
Rolling Sampler 1.4 Beta
Rolling Sampler 1.4 Beta is now available for Windows and macOS. You can locate it in the extras folder of your Rolling Sampler download. There are currently no demo versions available for this update.
Reminder: You can download the latest version of Rolling Sampler from the delivery email that you have anytime.
This update adds many highly requested features, and features dozens of improvements and bugfixes.
Rolling Sampler Bridge
Rolling Sampler Bridge is a plugin (VST3, AU) that streams audio to the standalone version of Rolling Sampler. To use it: -> Insert Rolling Sampler Bridge on the master track in your DAW. -> Navigate to Rolling Sampler Standalone's I/O Panel. -> Select "Rolling Sampler Bridge" through experimental inputs. Thats it, the audio will now show up in Rolling Sampler.
Note: The bridge plugin naively sends audio data to the standalone. Match the samplerates between the two ends to avoid the audio getting pitched up or down.
System Audio Capture (Windows)
This was a highly requested feature from Windows users that wanted to capture their system audio. This update brings it to the standalone version of Rolling Sampler. To use it: -> Navigate to Rolling Sampler Standalone's I/O Panel. -> Select "System Audio" through experimental inputs. Thats it, the audio will now show up in Rolling Sampler.
Note: This feature is not available on all Windows versions, particularly very old ones.
Dynamic Zoom
Zooming in and out with longer recording durations has been a constant pain point in past versions of Rolling Sampler. This update adds fully dynamic zoom. Roll the mousewheel, or use alt (option on macOS) and drag to zoom in and out around the capture. Maximum recording duration has also been increased.
Custom Themes
Another request was the ability to create custom themes. This update ships with a theme editor and the ability to use custom themes with Rolling Sampler. With this feature, and the new extra tweaks you can do to the standalone window, Rolling Sampler is now a chameleon:

To create, and load custom themes, follow the instructions in the theme editor.
Better Operation
While using Rolling Sampler, I have noticed that the extra keypresses and mouse modifiers get in the way when I have an instrument in one hand. For this update, I wanted to make sure I am able to operate the software with just one hand on the mouse. This required changing some controls and going over some UI decisions again, but I think the result is much better. I will have a cheatsheet at the end of this post describing the new set of controls.
Some things to adress:
Linux?
I have plans to introduce Linux builds, however introducing them at this point would slow development down significantly as I don't use Linux as my daily driver. I will look at this once this beta version has matured.
Side note: Getting drag and drop to work across all Linux distributions hasn't been a very successful endeavour in the past, however, I don't mind supporting popular distributions.
Where did playback markers go?
This is currently one feature that exists in 1.0.X versions and doesn't in this rewrite. I have an improved implementation in the works for >=1.4 versions.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 support
I had to make the unfortunate decision to deprecate Windows 7 and Windows 8 support going forward. This was done so I can keep improving the software. Legacy versions will still be offered alongside downloads.
Minimum macOS version
This update requires macOS 10.11 or higher to work. Like Windows versions, I had to make the decision to bump this version up (from 10.9) to improve the software. If you bought your mac in the last 8-9 years or so, you likely don't have to care about this.
Controls Cheatsheet:
- Select audio -> left drag
- Offset waveform -> shift + left click OR middle drag
- Horizontal zoom -> mousewheel OR alt + drag
- Audio preview -> right click
- Audio preview (selection) -> right click selection
- Vertical zoom -> ctrl + shift + drag
- Move standalone window -> ctrl + alt + drag
- Clear buffer -> shift + r
- Clear selection -> c
- Aim for the sides of the selection area from the outside to resize it.
- Replace alt and shift for all controls globally through settings.
I am always trying to make these controls more intuitive and accessible. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have feedback.
Feedback
This is a beta version and will likely have bugs. As I don't have a QA team, I rely on dogfooding and feedback from users to improve my software. If you have tried this beta version, feel free to let me know how it went! Thanks for reading! - Bird
